The Old Coracle Shed is a small riverside workshop on Severnside in Ironbridge, Telford, linked to the coracle men who worked on the River Severn. Coracles are small, round, lightweight boats, and this shed shows the cluttered everyday world of the people who made and used them. It is a short stop, but one of the most characterful on a walk through the town.

The story behind it

The shed was once something like a curiosity shop, packed with the odds and ends of a working river life. The coracle men knew the Severn better than anyone, and what was found inside reflects that. There were the tools for building coracles, but also scythes, rakes, axes, chains, wicker baskets, rabbit nets and traps for moles and rats. Many of the items have since been moved to a newer exhibition about the coracle men, so the shed itself is now something to look into rather than walk around.

The walls carried a kind of informal river diary. The coracle men reportedly wrote events in chalk, including winters when the Severn froze over in the 1920s and 1940s. It is a reminder that this trade depended on the moods of the river, season by season.
