About James Whitcomb Riley Museum Home & Visitor Center

The James Whitcomb Riley Museum Home & Visitor Center at 528 Lockerbie Street in Indianapolis is the Victorian house where the Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley lived for the last years of his life. It is a preserved historic home in the Lockerbie Square neighborhood, and it is one of the best places in the city to learn about a writer who was hugely popular in his day.

The story behind it

James Whitcomb Riley was born in Greenfield, Indiana, in 1849 and became one of America's best-loved poets. He wrote in a warm, homespun voice, and works such as "Little Orphant Annie" and "When the Frost Is on the Punkin" made him a household name. Many readers knew his lines by heart.

In 1893 Riley settled into this house on Lockerbie Street, where he stayed until his death in 1916. The house dates to the 1870s, and it was lived in by a family connected to the poet, who made his home there for more than two decades. It is now kept as a museum so visitors can see how a celebrated figure of the period lived. Riley's name also lives on in the city through the children's hospital that honors him.

What to look for

  • The Victorian character of the house itself, from its brick exterior to the proportions of its front rooms, which show how a comfortable city home looked at the turn of the twentieth century.
  • The period furnishings and personal touches inside, which give a sense of the daily life of a poet who was also a public celebrity.
  • The setting on Lockerbie Street, where the quiet, narrow streets and small historic houses of Lockerbie Square still feel like a separate little village near downtown.
  • The visitor center, which sets the house in the context of Riley's life, his poems and his place in Indiana's story.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow roughly an hour for the house and visitor center, and a little more if you want to wander the surrounding streets.
  • Entry to the house is usually by guided tour, so check current opening hours and tour arrangements before you go.
  • Lockerbie Square is compact and walkable, so it pairs well with a slow stroll before or after your visit. Daylight shows off the architecture best.
  • Downtown Indianapolis is close, so you can easily combine the museum with other nearby sights on foot.
