About The George H. W. Bush Monument

The George H. W. Bush Monument is a bronze statue of the 41st president of the United States, standing at 400 Texas Avenue in downtown Houston. It honors a man who made Texas his home and went on to the White House, and it is an easy stop on any walk through the city centre.

The story behind it

George H. W. Bush is not to be confused with his son, George W. Bush, the 43rd president. The elder Bush enlisted in the US Navy as a teenager, straight after finishing high school, and trained as a naval pilot at a very young age. In 1944, during World War II, his plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire on a bombing mission in the Pacific. He pressed on with the attack before bailing out, and he was rescued at sea.

After the war he studied at Yale, where he played first base and captained the baseball team, which reached the College World Series. He later moved to Texas and built a career in the oil business and then in public life. He served as a congressman, ambassador to the United Nations, head of the CIA and vice president, before serving as president from 1989 to 1993. Houston remained his home until he died in 2018, which is why a monument to him belongs in this city.

What to look for

  • Walk all the way around the bronze figure, because a statue like this reads differently from each side and the angle changes how the pose feels.
  • Look near the base for any plaque or inscription, which is the quickest way to see how the city chose to describe him.
  • Notice the setting on Texas Avenue, where a single human figure stands among downtown towers and passing traffic.
  • Take a moment to compare the quiet bronze with the busy street around it, since downtown Houston changes character from block to block.

Tips for your visit

  • Give it ten to fifteen minutes. It is a street-level monument, so you can see it quickly and carry on.
  • It stands outdoors, so there is nothing to go inside. Check the current situation around the site if you want to visit during an event.
  • Morning and late afternoon give softer light for photographs of the bronze, and downtown is usually calmer outside weekday rush hours.
  • Houston summers are hot and humid, so bring water and plan indoor stops, and remember that the downtown tunnels and nearby cafes offer shade and a break.
