About Helsinki Cathedral
Helsinki Cathedral is the white, green-domed Lutheran cathedral that stands above Senate Square in the centre of Helsinki, Finland. Its neoclassical silhouette is the best-known image of the city, and the wide steps in front make it one of the most natural places in Helsinki to stop, sit and look around.
The story behind it
The cathedral was designed by the architect Carl Ludvig Engel as part of the new city centre he planned around Senate Square after Helsinki became the capital of the Grand Duchy of Finland. It was built between 1830 and 1852 and finished after Engel's death. It was first known as St Nicholas' Church, in honour of Tsar Nicholas I, who was Grand Duke of Finland, and it took the name Helsinki Cathedral after Finland became independent in 1917.
In the cold, dark weeks of early January the building takes on another role. During the Lux Helsinki light festival the city is turned into a trail of light installations, and the cathedral's pale facade is one of the biggest surfaces for them. Check the current festival programme before you plan around it.
What to look for
- The long flight of steps up to the entrance, which gives one of the best views over Senate Square and the rooftops around it.
- The green central dome, surrounded by four smaller domes, which is easy to spot from across the city centre.
- The statues of the twelve apostles standing along the roofline, which you can pick out from the square below.
- The strict symmetry of the facade and its tall columns, a clear example of Engel's neoclassical style, which is echoed by the other buildings on the square.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the steps, the square and a look at the exterior, and more if you go inside. Check current opening hours and any visiting restrictions first.
- Soft morning or late afternoon light is kinder to the white walls than the middle of the day, and it is usually calmer then too.
- Senate Square is right next to the cathedral, and the buildings around it are part of the same neoclassical plan, so look at them together.
- The steps are a popular place to sit, so bring a coffee, but dress for the wind in the colder months.
See it on a quest
The cathedral is one stop on Helsinki Highlights: Gold Heist, a self-guided walk through the centre of the city that you play on your phone. You reach the cathedral on foot as part of a longer route, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you. It suits a heist-minded wander at your own pace, with no guide and no group to join. One ticket covers the whole group.
