About Grand Rapids Art Museum
The Grand Rapids Art Museum, usually called GRAM, is the main art museum in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. It is housed in a modern glass-walled building certified LEED Gold for its green design, and its collection runs from the Renaissance to modern times. It sits in the middle of the city's walkable core, which makes it an easy anchor for a stroll.
The story behind it
The museum was founded in 1910 as the Grand Rapids Art Gallery, and the name changed to the one it carries today not long afterward. For decades it had no purpose-built home. It started in a former residence on Fulton Street, then in 1981 moved into the old Federal Building on Pearl Street.
The building you see now was designed by the architect Kulapat Yantrasast of wHY Architecture. It replaced those borrowed spaces with a museum made for the job. Its collection includes thousands of works, among them a large holding of prints, drawings and photographs.
What to look for
- The big glass walls of the facade let you see into the museum from the street, so the building feels open to the city rather than closed off.
- The clean, modern lines of the architecture stand out against the older downtown buildings around it, so compare them as you walk the block.
- The museum's green design, recognized with LEED Gold certification, shows in how the building uses light and glass.
- The collection inside spans the Renaissance to the present, with many works on paper such as prints, drawings and photographs.
Tips for your visit
- Give yourself an hour or two if you plan to go inside, or about ten minutes if you only want to see the exterior.
- Check current opening hours and admission details before you go, since they can change.
- Late afternoon and dusk are good for looking at the glass walls, when the interior lighting shows through.
- The museum is right by Rosa Parks Circle and Monroe Center, so it pairs easily with a walk through the heart of downtown.
See it on a quest
Three Questo quests pass the museum. Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows in Grand Rapids is a good fit if you like a mystery theme with your sightseeing. You reach the museum on foot as one stop of a longer route through downtown, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle in front of what you see. One ticket covers the whole group.
Ghost Hunt in Grand Rapids suits anyone who enjoys a spooky angle on a city. The museum is one stop along the way, and you play at your own pace with no guide and no group to join. At each place the app gives you the background and then sets a puzzle based on the spot. One ticket covers the whole group.
Dorothy’s Quest: The Trials of Oz in Downtown, Grand Rapids is a lighter, story-led way to cover the same streets. You walk to the museum as part of a longer route, hear about it from the app when you get there, and solve a puzzle on the spot. One ticket covers the whole group.
