About Weinberg Center for the Arts
The Weinberg Center for the Arts is a historic theater at 20 West Patrick Street in downtown Frederick, Maryland. Opened in 1926 as the Tivoli Theatre, it is now a performing arts venue and one of the best-known buildings on the city's main downtown streets.
The story behind it
The building began life as the Tivoli, a picture palace from the era when a night out meant a film, live acts and a grand room to enjoy them in. Like many theaters of its age, it went through lean years as habits changed and audiences moved elsewhere.
It survived by being turned into a community arts venue. It now carries the name of the Weinberg family, whose support helped bring it back, and it hosts concerts, film screenings, dance and touring performances. Its working life as a theater is the reason it still anchors this stretch of Patrick Street.
What to look for
- The marquee and entrance on West Patrick Street, which announce what is playing and give the building its old-fashioned theater character.
- The posters and display boards near the doors, which show how varied the programme is, from live music to classic film.
- The scale of the building against its neighbors, a reminder that a 1920s theater was meant to stand out on the block.
- The surrounding rooflines and church spires of downtown Frederick, which are easy to spot from the sidewalk and explain the city's nickname, the City of Clustered Spires.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 10 to 15 minutes to see the exterior and read the posters. Plan a full evening if you want to catch a show.
- You can go inside for performances and events, so check the current schedule and opening hours before you travel.
- Evening is a good time to see it, when the marquee is lit and the street feels livelier.
- It sits in the middle of downtown Frederick, so shops, cafes and the rest of the historic streets are a short walk away.
See it on a quest
