About Estoril Railway Station
Estoril Railway Station is the stop on the Cascais line that serves the seaside town of Estoril, on the coast west of Lisbon. It is a working commuter station rather than a monument, but it sits at the foot of the town's resort district and is the natural starting point for exploring Estoril on foot, including its wartime story as a refuge and a meeting place for spies.
The story behind it
During the Second World War, Portugal stayed neutral and became an island of calm in a Europe at war. Estoril, on the stretch of coast known as the Costa do Sol, offered the mild climate, safety and glamour that royal families and other prominent exiles were looking for, and many of them settled here while the rest of the continent burned.
The same conditions drew spies and double agents. Agents from both sides of the conflict moved through the lobbies and bars of the town's grand hotels, among them the Hotel Palácio, which is why Estoril later gained a reputation as a nest of spies. The station is where that story begins for today's visitors, who arrive on the same coastal line.
What to look for
- The station is the link between Lisbon and the coast, so watch the mix of commuters, beachgoers and visitors to get a feel for how the town still connects to the capital.
- Look up from the station area towards the line of gardens running up to the Casino, the landmark that shaped Estoril's resort image.
- Notice how close the sea is: the beach at Tamariz is a short walk from the platforms, which explains why this was such an easy resort to reach.
- Keep an eye out for the grand hotel buildings further up the town, such as the Hotel Palácio, where the wartime spy stories are set.
Tips for your visit
- The station itself needs only a few minutes. Treat it as the start of a longer walk through Estoril rather than a stop in its own right.
- Trains run from Cais do Sodré in Lisbon along the coast, so check the current timetable before you go.
- Morning or late afternoon is the most comfortable time to walk, especially in summer, and the light is lovely on the seafront.
- The beach, the Casino gardens and the town centre are all within a short walk, so you can combine the station with a swim or a coffee.
See it on a quest
The station is one of the places on Estoril Highlights: The Spies' Nest, a self-guided walk themed around the town's wartime spy history. You reach the station on foot as one stop of a longer route through Estoril, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you. There is no guide to follow and no group to join, so you can start whenever you like. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group.
