About Boat lift & harbour
The boat lift at Kuipershaven in Dordrecht is a ship lift dating from 1928, built beside the Wolwevershaven harbour to lift vessels out of the water for repair. It is now a national monument and a reminder of the working harbour that once filled this part of the city.
The story behind it
The lift was installed in 1928 by the Machinefabriek L. Straatman Ketelmakerij, a company that had its works on the Kuipershaven from 1902 to 1996. Boats and ships that came into the harbour were raised here so that work could be done on the parts below the waterline, mostly marine propellers and rudders. At the start it could lift 30 tons. An upgrade in 1952 raised that to 40 tons.
In 2002 the lift was declared an industrial national monument. Its working life ended later: the last tenant, Jooren Scheepsschroef, stopped in 2014 because there was not enough work left for the business.
What to look for
- Look at the size of the lifting frame beside the water and imagine a loaded vessel being raised out of the harbour.
- Notice how close the lift stands to the quay, which shows how repairs were done right where ships arrived.
- Think about the propellers and rudders that were the everyday work here, and picture how much metal passed through this spot.
- Take in the Wolwevershaven harbour around it, where old industrial structures meet the quiet water of today.
Tips for your visit
- Plan on 10 to 15 minutes at the lift itself, longer if you want to stroll along the harbour edge.
- Soft morning or late afternoon light is good for photographing the metal structure against the water.
- It is best seen from the quayside outside; if you hope to get closer, check current access and any events before you go.
- The historic centre of Dordrecht is close by, so this pairs easily with a longer walk through the old town and harbours.
See it on a quest
The quest Saving the past in Dordrecht is a good way to meet this place, because the theme fits a monument that was saved from being forgotten. You walk to the boat lift as one stop on a longer route through the area, the app tells you about it as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle in front of what you can see. There is no guide and no group to join, you start when you like, and one ticket covers the whole group.
