The Duomo di Como, formally the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, is the cathedral of Como, standing on Piazza del Duomo a short walk from Lake Como. It is a Gothic building with Renaissance and Baroque touches, and it is one of the main reasons to pause in the old town. Its carved doorways, its dome and the local legend of a small stone frog reward anyone who looks closely.

The story behind it

Construction of the present cathedral began in the late 14th century on the site of an earlier church. Work continued for several centuries, which is why the building mixes styles: a Gothic structure, Renaissance decoration on the facade, and a large dome added in the 18th century to a design by Filippo Juvarra.

The best-known story belongs to the side entrance, the Porta della Rana, or frog door. Among the carved decoration you can find a small frog. A local legend says it held back the waters when Lake Como threatened to flood the city, and many people in Como still feel affection for it. Other tales attached to the frog, such as buried treasure, are retold in the city, but they are folklore and not documented history.
