About The Viewpoint Stairs
The Viewpoint Stairs is a stairway at Strada Grădinii Publice 4 in Brăila, Romania, beside the city's public park. It is a good place to pause on a walk through the old centre, and the ground around it carries one of the city's best-known local legends: a network of tunnels said to run beneath the park.
The story behind it
Brăila spent several centuries under Ottoman rule, and local tradition says that in that period a network of underground tunnels was dug in the area, with many of them running beneath the public park. The story goes that they were used to move valuable goods down towards the Danube, which was the lifeline of the port city.
The tunnels are said to have been enormous, large enough to get lost in, and legend adds that smugglers and criminals used them. Today they are not open to visitors, so what remains is the atmosphere and the stories. No one can walk down and check, which is part of why the tale has lasted.
What to look for
- Look at the stairs themselves and pause at a landing to take in the outlook, which is the reason the spot has its name.
- Notice the lie of the land around the park, and imagine goods being moved towards the river below it.
- Watch for the greenery of the public park beside you, a calm contrast to the busy streets of the centre.
- Look towards the Danube, the river that shaped Brăila's trade and the tunnel legends.
Tips for your visit
- Give it 10 to 15 minutes on its own, or longer if you also stroll through the public park next to it.
- Late afternoon is a pleasant time for the view and for the light, and it is cooler in summer.
- The tunnels are not accessible, so do not expect to go underground here.
- Pair the stop with a walk through the park and the nearby streets of the old centre, and check current opening hours for any park or venue you plan to enter.

The app tells you about each place as you arrive and sets a puzzle based on what is in front of you, so you look at the stairs and their surroundings more closely than a quick photo would allow. One ticket covers the whole group, there is no guide to book, and you can start whenever you like.
