About Rua da Violinha

Rua da Violinha is a very narrow lane in the historic centre of Braga, in northern Portugal, and is known locally as the city's narrowest street. It is a short, quiet passage that is easy to walk past, but residents and visitors have long been fond of it, and its name and its stories say a lot about everyday life in old Braga.

The story behind it

Nobody agrees on where the name comes from. One explanation is that "Violinha" is a worn-down form of "vielinha", meaning little alley. The other says the street once had workshops making violinhas, small guitars similar to a ukulele. Both versions are repeated locally, and the playful name has stuck either way.

Local tradition also remembers the lane as the street of the chicken coops, because residents kept cocks, hens and turkeys here. The houses stand so close together that neighbours are said to have greeted each other from their windows every morning, and some even shared clotheslines across the gap.

What to look for

  • Notice how close the walls on both sides are, and try stretching out your arms. Many passers-by do exactly that, to see whether they can touch both sides at once.
  • Look up at the windows facing each other across the lane, and picture neighbours calling good morning across the gap.
  • Look at the old stonework and the different wall surfaces along the passage, which show how the street has been patched and lived in over time.
  • Pay attention to the street sign and the name itself, and decide for yourself whether you prefer the little alley or the little guitar.

Tips for your visit

  • Plan on five to ten minutes here. It is a short stop, best treated as part of a longer walk through the old town.
  • Go early in the morning or later in the day, when the lane is quieter and you can take photos without people in the frame.
  • The street is a public passage, free to walk through, and there is nothing to go inside, so it works for any visit and any weather.
  • Combine it with the rest of Braga's historic centre, which has churches, squares and cafes within easy walking distance. Wear comfortable shoes, as the old streets are uneven.
