Green George The Troll, Copenhagen — Visitor Guide & Things to Do Nearby
About Green George The Troll
Sitting in the heart of Freetown Christiania, Green George is a magnificent troll sculpture created by artist Thomas Dambo in 2019 as part of "The Great Troll Festival." What makes Green George especially fitting for Christiania is that he was built entirely from scrap wood collected from the freetown's own garbage disposal, a perfect embodiment of the community's commitment to sustainability and creative reuse.
The troll sits peacefully with white petal-like pieces in his hands, arranged to look as though he is reading a book. Behind him, a large mural by renowned street artist Rasmus Balstrom reads "The World Is in Our Hands," adding another layer of meaning to the gentle giant's pose.
Thomas Dambo is famous worldwide for building enormous trolls from recycled materials, hiding them in parks and forests for people to discover. Green George fits this tradition perfectly, but his Christiania setting gives him extra significance. This self-governing community, established in 1971 when squatters took over an abandoned military complex, has always valued art made from whatever materials are at hand.
Finding Green George is part of the fun. He does not announce himself with signs or tourist information boards. You have to wander Christiania's paths, past colorful houses and community gardens, until the giant reveals himself among the trees.
A Questo quest through Copenhagen's alternative side can lead you to Green George and other Christiania treasures, turning the search for hidden art into a proper adventure.
