Which Roman sites in Colchester does this walk take in?
The route starts at Balkerne Gate and passes Headgate, the Roman church, the remains of the Roman Circus, Scheregate Steps, Trinity Church, the Town Hall, the Roman Theatre, a Roman house and Duncan's Gate. It finishes at Colchester Castle. No attraction tickets are needed for any of the stops.
Where does the walk start and finish?
You start at Balkerne Gate and finish at Colchester Castle. It is not a loop, so you end up on the other side of the town centre from where you began. The route covers about 3.6 km on foot.
How long does it take, and can we pause?
Most players take about 2.5 hours, including the walking and the puzzles. You can pause at any point and continue later. If it turns cold, you can stop and warm up indoors at almost any location on the route.
Can we play as a group?
Yes. One ticket covers the whole group playing together, so friends, couples or a family can follow the route on one phone. There is no tour group to join and no guide, so you set your own pace between stops.
Do we need to book a time, and when can we play?
There is no fixed slot to book. You can start whenever suits you between 9am and 6pm, every day except Mondays and holidays. Playing at night isn't recommended, so plan to begin early enough to finish in daylight.
