Manchester Town Hall is one of the finest Victorian Gothic buildings in the world, a Grade I listed masterpiece designed by Alfred Waterhouse and opened in 1877.

Waterhouse won the commission in 1867 from a competition that attracted 137 entries. The building took nine years to construct, using 14 million bricks, and its 85-metre clock tower houses "Great Abel," a bell named after Mayor Abel Heywood who championed the project.

The interior is equally impressive. The Great Hall features the Manchester Murals by Ford Madox Brown, a series of 12 paintings illustrating key moments in the city's history, from the Romans at Mancenion to the opening of the Bridgewater Canal. Brown worked on the murals from 1879 until his death in 1893.

The architecture is a tour de force of Victorian Gothic: rib-vaulted corridors, tall arched windows, and a triangular floor plan that follows the irregular shape of the site. Every surface is decorated with carved stone, tiles, and ironwork.

The Town Hall has been closed for a major refurbishment since 2024. When complete, it will reopen with restored interiors and new public spaces. Before the closure, guided tours offered access to areas normally closed to the public, including Victorian police cells and the clock tower.
