Yes. It is an outdoor escape game played on your phone in San Francisco's Chinatown. The app leads you from place to place, tells the story of each one and sets a puzzle based on what is in front of you, covering Chinese immigrant life from the Gold Rush to the 1906 earthquake and beyond.
Where does the Chinatown walk start and finish?
It starts at Bush Street and Grant Avenue and finishes at the Golden Gate fortune cookie factory, so it does not return to the start. Along the way you pass Old St. Mary's Cathedral, the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association, Portsmouth Square, the Tin How Temple and the Old Chinese Telephone Exchange.
How long does it take and how far is the walk?
Most players take about 1.5 to 2 hours, including walking and solving the puzzles. The route covers 2.1 km through Chinatown. It is best played during the day, and you can pause and continue later if you want a break for tea or food.
Is it good for kids, and can we play as a group?
It is recommended for families, and the puzzles give children something to look for at each stop, as long as they can manage 2.1 km on foot. One ticket covers the whole group playing together, so families and friends can share a single phone and solve the clues as a team.
Do we need to book a time slot?
No. There is no group to join and no guide to meet, so you can start whenever suits you. The game runs on your phone, and you can pause along the way and pick it up again later. Daylight is best for spotting the details the puzzles ask about.
