Über Santa Cecilia in Trastevere
Santa Cecilia in Trastevere is a basilica in the Trastevere district of Rome, built where tradition places the home of Saint Cecilia, a early Christian martyr later honoured as the patron saint of music. It is known for its calm courtyard, its medieval mosaic and a tender marble figure of the saint beneath the altar.
The story behind it
According to tradition, the church stands over a Roman townhouse, a domus, that belonged to Cecilia, a young Christian woman put to death in the early centuries of the faith. The legend says her executioners first tried to suffocate her in the steam of her own bathroom, and when that failed they turned to the sword. Roman custom allowed only three blows, and the third did not finish the work. Cecilia is said to have lived on for three days before she died.
Over the centuries the church grew on this spot. It was rebuilt in the 9th century, and the Romanesque bell tower and the later Baroque touches are still part of what you see today. Cecilia later became the patron saint of musicians, which is why concerts and music students are still linked with the church. Treat the details of her death as legend rather than record, since the sources are far later than the events.
What to look for
- The courtyard in front of the church has a garden and a large ancient marble vase at its centre, and it makes a quiet pause from the lively streets outside.
- The marble statue of Cecilia lying on her side by the sculptor Stefano Maderno sits below the high altar, shown as her body was said to have been found when the tomb was opened in 1599.
- The golden mosaic in the apse dates from the 9th century and shows figures of saints against a bright background.
- The slender Romanesque bell tower rises above the rooftops and is easy to spot from the surrounding lanes.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 30 to 45 minutes to see the courtyard and the church, a little longer if you visit the extra areas.
- Check current opening hours before you go, as the church, the medieval fresco area and the excavations below may be open at different times.
- Visit in the morning or late afternoon, when the streets of Trastevere are quieter and the light in the courtyard is soft.
- Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, as this is a working place of worship.
