Über Tour Rose (The Pink Tower)
Hidden behind an archway at 16 rue du Boeuf, the Tour Rose is one of Vieux Lyon's most enchanting secrets: a Renaissance tower with a gorgeous ochre spiral staircase that earned its rosy name only in 1975 when it was repainted in its now-iconic pink hue. Built in the 16th century, the tower is attributed to Italian architect Sebastiano Serlio, who brought Renaissance design principles from Italy to France. Also known as the Maison du Crible, this building carries yet another royal connection: King Henry IV is said to have stayed here in 1600 during his marriage celebrations to Marie de Medici, adding a touch of romantic history to an already romantic building. The spiral staircase that winds up through the tower is a masterpiece of Renaissance engineering, its ochre tones catching the light in ways that make photographers weep with joy. Listed as a historic monument since 1937, the Tour Rose represents the very best of the Italian Renaissance influence that transformed Lyon's architecture during the 16th century, when the city's silk trade brought Italian merchants, bankers, and builders across the Alps. The courtyard where the tower stands is one of those hidden Lyon spaces that reward the curious: you'd never know it was there from the street. Questo's secret Lyon trail leads you through the archway to discover this pink treasure that most visitors walk right past.
