Über University Square, Bucharest

University Square (Piața Universității) is the busiest crossroads in central Bucharest, where four major boulevards meet in front of the University of Bucharest. It is a favourite meeting point for locals and a place tied to some of the city's best-known moments, from the lost Colțea Tower to the protests of 1989 and 1990.

The story behind it

Long before the boulevards, this ground belonged to the Colțea complex, a monastery and church founded by Mihail Cantacuzino in the early 1700s. Its tall bell tower, the Colțea Tower, rose over the old town and was one of Bucharest's best-known landmarks. Locals could climb it for a view across the rooftops, and it was also used as a fire lookout. The tower was pulled down in 1888 to make way for the new boulevard.

The square you see today comes from that wave of modernisation. Late 19th century planners looked to Paris and its wide, straight avenues, and the junction was laid out as a grand intersection in that spirit. In the twentieth century it became the city's gathering place for public protest, remembered above all for the demonstrations of 1989 and the spring of 1990.

What to look for

  • The University of Bucharest building along the boulevard, with the statues of notable Romanian scholars and public figures standing in front of it.
  • The equestrian statue of Michael the Brave in the middle of the square, facing the National Theatre.
  • The wide, Paris-inspired sweep of the surrounding boulevards, easiest to read from the edge of the square, where you can see how the four arms of the junction open out.
  • The Colțea church and hospital area just off the square, a reminder of the old complex that the tower once belonged to.

Tips for your visit

  • Give the square itself 15 to 30 minutes, longer if you want to read the statues or pause at a café nearby.
  • Early evening is lively, when people gather and the boulevards fill up. Morning is calmer for photos.
  • It is an open public space, so there is nothing to book. The university buildings are an active institution, so check current access before planning to go in.
  • Old Town (Lipscani) is a short walk south, and the park at Cișmigiu is a short walk west, so the square works well as a start or middle point on a day on foot.
