Families with primary-school children and couples who enjoy legends can spend around two hours playing detective through Hallstatt, following the tale of the greedy Cervusan people said to have created the lake, from Kalvarienbergkirche past the Welterbemuseum and Hallstattblick to Talstation. Skip it if stairs are a struggle: the 3.3 km route climbs plenty of them, and there is no live guide to answer questions.
