Jimi Hendrix's House, San Francisco — Visitor Guide & Things to Do Nearby
About Jimi Hendrix's House
At the corner of Haight and Ashbury streets, a red house at 1524A Haight Street carries one of San Francisco's most debated historical claims. A striking mural of Jimi Hendrix by graffiti artist Sean Griffin (painted in 2022) covers the side of the building, and tourists flock here to photograph the house associated with the legendary guitarist.
The truth is complicated. While Hendrix performed extensively in the Bay Area during the Summer of Love, late biographer Charles Cross stated in 2023 that Hendrix never actually owned property in San Francisco. The association may be more folklore than fact, but in a neighborhood where myth and reality have always blurred, that seems almost fitting.
What is beyond dispute is Haight-Ashbury's significance as ground zero of 1960s counterculture. The Grateful Dead lived at 710 Ashbury, Janis Joplin was just down the street, and Jefferson Airplane held court nearby. Hendrix was part of this world, performing legendary shows at venues across the city even if his official address was elsewhere.
The red house with its mural has become a landmark regardless of the historical debate. It represents the spirit of an era when music, rebellion, and community converged on these few blocks and changed American culture forever.
A Questo quest through Haight-Ashbury connects the music landmarks of the 1960s into a walking adventure that brings the Summer of Love back to life on the streets where it happened.
