About Galleria dell'Accademia

On August 16, 1501, a 26-year-old Michelangelo received a commission worth 400 ducats: carve a monumental figure of David from a single block of marble that two other sculptors had already tried and failed to work with. Three years later, the result left Florence speechless.

When the 17-foot masterpiece was unveiled on September 8, 1504, a committee of the city's greatest artists (including Leonardo da Vinci and Sandro Botticelli) decided it should stand at the entrance to Palazzo Vecchio as a symbol of Florentine strength and independence. David was not just a sculpture. He was a political statement.

The statue remained outdoors for nearly 400 years until 1873, when it was moved indoors to protect it from the elements. The relocation was a monumental operation: workers secured David in a wheeled wooden crate and inched him across the city over 11 days, from July 30 to August 10. He reached the Accademia, but it was not until 1882 that architect Emilio De Fabris designed the special tribune where David stands today, bathed in light streaming through a domed skylight above.

Standing in front of David in person is one of those experiences where photographs simply cannot prepare you. The scale, the detail, the expression on his face as he sizes up Goliath before the fight: it all comes together in a way that makes you understand why this single sculpture changed the course of Western art.

A Questo quest through Florence can build the anticipation before you arrive at the Accademia, weaving the story of Michelangelo and David into your walk through the city.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Michelangelo's David at the Accademia?
David originally stood outdoors at Palazzo Vecchio from 1504 until 1873, when it was moved to the Galleria dell'Accademia to protect it from weather damage. A specially designed tribune with natural light from above was completed in 1882 to display the sculpture. A replica now stands at the original outdoor location.
How tall is Michelangelo's David?
Michelangelo's David stands 17 feet (5.17 meters) tall, carved from a single block of marble. Michelangelo was just 26 when he began the three-year project in 1501, working with a block of marble that two other sculptors had already attempted and abandoned.
Do I need tickets for the Galleria dell'Accademia?
Yes, tickets are required and it is strongly recommended to book in advance, especially during peak tourist season. The Accademia is one of the most visited museums in Italy. Pre-booked timed entry tickets help you avoid very long queues at the door.
What else is in the Galleria dell'Accademia besides David?
While David is the star attraction, the Accademia also houses other important Michelangelo works including his unfinished 'Prisoners' (or 'Slaves') sculptures, plus a collection of Renaissance paintings and musical instruments. The museum offers more than many visitors expect beyond the famous centerpiece.
