About Humboldt University
Humboldt University is one of the most important universities in European history and the birthplace of the modern research university concept. Its main building stands on Unter den Linden, Berlin's grandest boulevard.
The university was founded in 1810 by Wilhelm von Humboldt and opened its doors on October 10, 1810, with 256 students. Humboldt's revolutionary idea was that teaching and research should be unified: professors should be active researchers, and students should learn by participating in research, not just listening to lectures. This model transformed higher education worldwide.
The main building, originally the Prince Heinrich Palace, was designed by Johann Boumann in 1753. Its neoclassical facade and courtyard sit directly across from the Bebelplatz, the square where Nazi students burned over 20,000 books on May 10, 1933. A memorial by Micha Ullman, a glass panel in the pavement revealing empty bookshelves below, marks the spot.
The university's alumni and faculty include 57 Nobel laureates: Albert Einstein taught physics here, Max Planck developed quantum theory here, and Karl Marx studied law and philosophy here. Other notable figures include Hegel, Schopenhauer, Otto von Bismarck, and the Brothers Grimm.
If you're on a Questo quest through Unter den Linden, Humboldt University is a stop where the idea of the modern university was born, and where the destruction and rebuilding of knowledge have played out within the same walls.
