Monbijou Park is a small green space on the banks of the Spree River, directly opposite Museum Island. The name means "my jewel" in French, a nod to its origins as the garden of a Prussian royal palace.

The original Monbijou Palace was built in 1703 as a summer residence for Queen Sophie Dorothea of Hanover. It was a Rococo gem that served Prussian royalty for over two centuries. The Marienkirche (St. Mary's Church) is one of the oldest churches in Berlin, standing near the base of the Fernsehturm (TV Tower) in Alexanderplatz. It has been a place of worship since the late 13th century.

The church was first mentioned in records from 1292, though it may have been built as early as 1270. The Gothic hall church was originally made of fieldstone and later clad in brick, reflecting the transition of building materials in medieval Berlin.

One of the church's most remarkable features is the Totentanz (Dance of Death) fresco, a 22-metre-long painting discovered on the vestibule wall in 1860 and dated to around 1484. The fresco depicts figures from all walks of life, from bishops to beggars, dancing with skeletons, a medieval reminder that death comes for everyone equally.

The church also contains a marble pulpit carved by Andreas Schluter in 1703, considered one of the finest Baroque works in Berlin, and a 15th-century bronze baptismal font.

The Marienkirche is the only medieval parish church in central Berlin still in active use. It survived World War II largely intact, though the surrounding neighbourhood was completely destroyed. The Gendarmenmarkt is widely considered the most beautiful square in Berlin, a grand ensemble of three buildings that represents the best of 18th-century Prussian architecture.

The square was created in 1688 during Berlin's expansion into Friedrichstadt. Its name comes from the "Gens d'armes," a regiment of French Huguenot soldiers who were stationed here from 1736 to 1782. The German Cathedral (Deutscher Dom), built in 1708, faces it from the south side, creating a symmetrical frame for the square. The gate was built between 1788 and 1791 under King Frederick William II of Prussia, designed by Carl Gotthard Langhans and modelled on the Propylaea, the entrance to the Acropolis in Athens. It was Berlin's first Greek Revival structure, a bold statement of Prussian ambition.

The Quadriga, a bronze sculpture of Victoria driving a chariot pulled by four horses, was placed on top in 1793. Napoleon seized it and carried it off to Paris in 1806 after conquering Prussia. After his defeat, the Prussians recovered it in 1814 and brought it home in triumph.

During the Cold War, the gate stood in the no-man's land between East and West Berlin, inaccessible from either side. In October 1961, American and Soviet tanks faced each other nearby in one of the tensest moments of the Cold War. The Museum fur Naturkunde is one of the largest natural history museums in the world, housing over 30 million items in a grand 19th-century building in Berlin-Mitte.

The star attraction is the skeleton of Giraffatitan brancai (formerly classified as Brachiosaurus), the tallest mounted dinosaur skeleton in the world at 13.27 metres. It was excavated from Tendaguru Hill in what is now Tanzania between 1909 and 1913 by German paleontological expeditions.

Another highlight is the specimen of Archaeopteryx lithographica, one of the most important fossils ever discovered. This 150-million-year-old transitional fossil between dinosaurs and birds is often called the most valuable natural history specimen in existence.

The Neue Wache on Unter den Linden, originally built in 1818 as a guardhouse, was rededicated in 1993 as the Central Memorial of the Federal Republic of Germany. The Sandkrugbrucke is a modern bridge crossing the Berlin-Spandauer Schifffahrtskanal on Invalidenstrasse, connecting the districts of Mitte and Tiergarten. Its name comes from the "Sandkrug," an 18th-century inn that was once a popular destination for Berlin day-trippers.

A crossing has existed at this spot since the 1700s, with a stone bridge documented from 1780. When the canal was widened around 1875 to accommodate growing barge traffic, all four existing bridges had to be demolished and rebuilt.

During the Cold War, the canal served as part of the border between East and West Berlin, and the bridge was closed. After reunification, the crossing was reopened and a new bridge was completed at the end of 1994, designed by architects Birgitt Welter and Thomas Baumann. The modern five-span steel structure reconnected Invalidenstrasse as a major east-west thoroughfare.

The bridge sits in a neighbourhood that has been transformed since reunification. Berlin's Hauptbahnhof (main train station), which opened in 2006, is nearby, as is the Moabit Historical Prison Park and the Spreebogen government district.

The Border House on Bernauer Strasse is one of the most haunting sites along the former route of the Berlin Wall. It was here, at the border between the Wedding and Mitte districts, that some of the most dramatic escape attempts took place in the early days of the Wall.

When the Wall went up on August 13, 1961, the buildings on Bernauer Strasse found themselves in an impossible position: their front doors opened into West Berlin, but they technically stood on East Berlin soil. For a few desperate weeks, residents jumped from upper-storey windows into rescue nets held by West Berlin firefighters below.

On August 22, 1961, Ida Siekmann became the first person to die at the Berlin Wall when she jumped from the third floor of Bernauer Strasse 48. She died of her injuries.

By October 1961, East German authorities had bricked up all the windows facing west and forcibly evacuated the residents. The buildings were eventually demolished to create the "death strip," the open ground between the inner and outer walls that made escape nearly impossible.

Today, the site at Bernauer Strasse 10a has been excavated and preserved as an open-air memorial. Foundation walls and archaeological remains are visible, and information panels tell the stories of the people who lived, escaped, and died here.

Checkpoint Charlie was the most famous crossing point between East and West Berlin during the Cold War, and today it's one of the most visited historical sites in Germany.

The checkpoint was established on September 22, 1961, just weeks after the Berlin Wall went up on August 13. It was the third Allied checkpoint (after Alpha and Bravo), named using the NATO phonetic alphabet. Only foreigners, diplomats, and Allied military personnel were allowed to cross here.

In October 1961, Checkpoint Charlie was the site of one of the tensest moments of the Cold War. American and Soviet tanks faced each other across the border at point-blank range for 16 hours, weapons loaded and aimed. The world held its breath. Eventually, the Soviets withdrew, and the confrontation ended without a shot.

The original guard booth was removed on June 22, 1990, and the original is now in the Allied Museum in Berlin-Dahlem. The booth you see today is a replica. The Checkpoint Charlie Museum (Mauermuseum), which opened in June 1963, documents the history of the Wall and the extraordinary escape attempts people made: tunnels, hidden car compartments, hot air balloons, and even a homemade submarine.

The Moabit Historical Prison Park is a memorial park built on the site of a 19th-century prison that holds some of the darkest chapters in Berlin's history. What was once a place of imprisonment is now a place of reflection.

The Zellengefangnis Moabit (Moabit Cell Prison) was built between 1842 and 1849, designed by Carl Ferdinand Busse, a student of Karl Friedrich Schinkel. It was modelled on London's Pentonville Prison, with a central hub and four radiating cell wings, a design intended to facilitate surveillance. The prison held around 520 individual cells.

During the Nazi regime, the prison became a Gestapo dungeon. Of 306 registered prisoners held under the Nazis, only 35 survived. After the July 20, 1944, assassination attempt against Hitler, resistance fighters were imprisoned here before their trials and executions.

The writer Wolfgang Borchert, author of "The Man Outside," was imprisoned here for nine months in 1944 for anti-war statements.

The prison closed in 1955, and the complex was demolished in 1958. In 2006, the site was transformed into a memorial park. The layout of the original prison wings is traced in the landscape, and remaining five-metre brick walls define the space. Ground-level reliefs show the former cell block positions.

The Jugend Widerstand Museum (Museum of Youth Resistance) in Berlin-Friedrichshain documents the stories of young people who stood up against authoritarian regimes, particularly during the East German (GDR) period.

The museum was established in January 2008 and is located on Rigaer Strasse, a street that itself has a history of alternative culture and resistance in the Friedrichshain district. The exhibition focuses on the tradition of youth opposition in Germany, from resistance against the Nazi regime through to the peaceful revolution of 1989.

What makes the museum distinctive is its focus on personal stories. Rather than presenting history through dates and policy documents, it tells the stories of individual young people who risked their freedom and sometimes their lives to stand up for what they believed in. The collection includes personal items, photographs, letters, and testimonies.

Jugend Widerstand Museum

The Stasi Museum is housed in the former headquarters of the East German secret police (Ministerium fur Staatssicherheit) in Berlin-Lichtenberg. It offers a chilling look at one of the most pervasive surveillance states in history.

The museum is centred on the office and private quarters of Erich Mielke, the minister who ran the Stasi for 32 years (1957-1989). His office has been preserved exactly as he left it: the wood-panelled walls, the desk, the secure telephone lines. It feels like he just stepped out.

The Stasi employed over 91,000 full-time staff and recruited an estimated 189,000 informal collaborators (Inoffizielle Mitarbeiter), meaning roughly one in every 63 East Germans was reporting on their neighbours, friends, or family.

The museum displays the tools of surveillance: hidden cameras in watering cans, microphones in ties, scent samples collected from dissidents' chairs (stored in jars to track people by smell using dogs). The sheer creativity of the surveillance apparatus is as disturbing as it is inventive.

When the Berlin Wall fell on November 9, 1989, Stasi employees began shredding files. Citizens stormed the building on January 15, 1990, stopping the destruction and preserving the archives that would later help Germans reckon with their history.
