Black Tower, Brussels — Visitor Guide & Things to Do Nearby
O Black Tower
The Black Tower is one of the best-preserved remnants of Brussels' first fortifications, built in the early 13th century as part of a four-kilometer defensive wall that once encircled the growing city. It served as a guard post and lookout, protecting the commerce and inhabitants of medieval Brussels.
When Brussels built its second, larger fortifications at the end of the 14th century, the tower's military purpose became obsolete. Rather than demolishing it, resourceful Brusselers turned it into a tavern called "In the Tower" during the 16th century, beginning its long second life as a hospitality venue.
The tower nearly disappeared in 1888 when it was threatened with demolition. Mayor Charles Buls intervened to save it, and architect Victor Jamaer restored the gable, roof, and bent radius. On February 1, 1937, it was officially classified as a historical monument.
Today the Black Tower stands as a striking oddity: a compact medieval stone tower surrounded by modern buildings, a time capsule from the 13th century marooned in the 21st. Its dark stone walls and defensive proportions look almost defiant against the glass and concrete around it.
The tower is a perfect example of why exploring Brussels on foot is so rewarding. Turn a corner and you stumble upon 800 years of history wedged between a cafe and a department store. A Questo quest through Brussels leads you to hidden survivors like the Black Tower, connecting the medieval city with its modern counterpart.
