Couples and families curious about Budapest's 150 years of Ottoman rule will follow clues from the Turkish cemetery through the Castle District, past a pasha's tomb and the Kiraly Baths, to the tomb of Gül Baba and its rose garden. Is this a self-guided, app-based game in Budapest?
Yes. You play on your phone, and the app leads you from place to place, tells the story of each stop and sets a puzzle in what is in front of you. There is no guide and no group to join, so you can start whenever you like.
What is the time travel story about?
The clues take you back to the 150-year Ottoman occupation of Buda. Along the way you learn how Ottoman culture shaped modern Hungary while visiting the old castle walls, a Turkish bath, a pasha's tomb and the tomb of the Islamic saint Gül Baba.
Where does the walk start and finish?
It starts at the Turkish cemetery and finishes at Gül Baba and Rosegarden, so it does not return to the start. In between you pass the Buda Castle Tower Gate, Ruszwurm Confectionery, the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene, the Pasha Tomb and the Kiraly Baths.
How long does it take, and can we pause?
Most players take close to three hours to cover the 5.3 km route, puzzles included. You do not need to book a time, and you can pause the game, for a coffee at Ruszwurm for example, and continue later.
Can we play as a family or a group?
Yes. The quest is recommended for families and couples, and one ticket covers the whole group playing together. Children should be old enough to enjoy history puzzles and manage a 5.3 km walk of nearly three hours.
