À propos Palazzo Madama
Palazzo Madama is a historic palace in the middle of Piazza Castello in Turin, Italy. It grew from a Roman gate into a medieval castle and then a Baroque residence, and it takes its name from the royal women of the House of Savoy who lived there. Today it is one of the best places in the city to read Turin's layered past in a single building.
The story behind it
The site began as a gate in the walls of Roman Turin. In the Middle Ages it became a fortified castle, and over the centuries the Savoy dynasty turned it into a residence. Its name comes from the title "Madama Reale", given to royal ladies of the court. The best-known of them is Marie Christine of France, daughter of Henry IV of France and Marie de' Medici.
Marie Christine arrived in Turin with French tastes for luxury and was known for the balls she held. After her husband's death she ruled as regent for her young sons. She had to fend off pressure from rival branches of the Savoy family as well as from her native France, while she worked to make Turin a more modern capital with a stronger administration. A figure this powerful attracted gossip. Rumour said she took lovers and threw them into the Po when she tired of them, and that she was a skilled poisoner. These are tales of the court, not proven history, but they still shape how Turin remembers her. The palace's famous Baroque facade facing the square was added in the early 18th century, to designs by Filippo Juvarra.
What to look for
- The contrast between the two sides of the building: a grand Baroque facade toward the square, and the squat towers of the older medieval castle behind it.
- The large windows and tall columns of Juvarra's facade, which give the palace a theatrical look when seen from the middle of Piazza Castello.
- The corner towers and brickwork, which show how a fortress was later turned into a royal home.
- The surrounding square itself, where the palace stands beside other Savoy buildings and gives a sense of how the dynasty arranged its seat of power.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 20 to 30 minutes to see the outside and the square, and more if you plan to visit the museum inside. Check current opening hours before you go.
- Late afternoon light is kind to the facade, and the square is calmer early in the morning.
- Piazza Castello is a natural hub, so the Royal Palace and the city's main arcaded streets are all within a short walk.
- Walking around the whole building, not just the front, shows the medieval and Baroque parts side by side.
See it on a quest
The quest Ghosts of Turin: The Hidden Spell brings you to Palazzo Madama on foot as one stop on a longer route through the city centre. The app tells you about the palace when you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you, which makes you look at the building more closely. The theme suits a place with such dark court rumours. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group.
