À propos Puerta de Jerez
The Puerta de Jerez is one of the old gateways into the walled town of Tarifa, in the province of Cádiz, Spain. It is a short stroll from the heart of the old town and matters for two reasons: it was a working entrance where goods were taxed as they came and went, and it is linked to Paulo Coelho's novel The Alchemist.
The story behind it
Like the other gates of Tarifa's walls, the Puerta de Jerez controlled who and what entered the town. According to the route creators, the small niche at the side of the gate served until the twentieth century as a room where a consumption tax was collected on merchandise passing in and out.
The gate also has a literary side. Readers of The Alchemist like to think that Santiago, the Andalusian shepherd at the centre of the story, came into Tarifa through this very door. In the novel, Melchizedek, king of Salem, speaks to him in a square in the town, urges him to follow his Personal Legend and gives him two stones, Urim and Thummim, which are described as a means of revelation. That the shepherd used this particular gate is a likely guess, not a documented fact.
What to look for
- The side niche beside the gate, a small space that was once used for collecting tax on goods.
- The thickness of the wall around the opening, which shows how the gate was built to be a checkpoint as well as a doorway.
- The change of scene as you pass through, from the busier streets outside to the narrow lanes of the old town.
- The stretches of wall on either side, which help you picture how the town was once enclosed.
Tips for your visit
- You only need about ten minutes at the gate itself, but it works best as one stop on a longer walk through the old town.
- It stands on a public street, so you can see it and walk through it at any time of day without a ticket.
- Morning or late afternoon is more comfortable for walking, and the light is softer for photos. Tarifa can be very windy, so bring a layer.
- Other sights of the old town are within walking distance, including the castle and the churches, so combine them in one outing and check current opening hours for anything you want to enter.
See it on a quest
The Puerta de Jerez is a stop on Discover Tarifa Through the Eyes of an Alchemist, a self-guided walk themed around Coelho's novel. You reach the gate on foot as one place in a longer route through the town, the app tells you about it as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle using what is right in front of you, such as the niche beside the gate. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group. You can start whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join.
