À propos Hopper Silos
The Hopper Silos are a set of cone-bottom grain silos standing in front of Hotel Emma at the Pearl, the former brewery complex in San Antonio, Texas. They are a leftover from the Pearl Brewery's working days and a good place to see how the district's industrial past sits alongside its restaurants, hotel and cooking school today.
The story behind it
Silos of this shape are called hopper or cone-bottom silos. The sloping base lets the contents flow out under gravity, which makes them easy to unload, drain, clean and maintain. At a brewery, the likely job for tanks like these was storing large quantities of malt, a dried, germinated grain. Malt is the base of beer and whiskey, and it also turns up in bagels and in malted milk, the ingredient behind the candy Whoppers.
The Pearl Brewery is a long-established San Antonio name, and the old brewhouse now holds Hotel Emma, which keeps much of the industrial character of the original buildings. The silos stand directly in front of it. Nearby, a tall brewery chimney rises over the complex, and the San Antonio campus of the Culinary Institute of America sits in the same district. The institute began in 1946 in New Haven, Connecticut, as a school to train returning World War II veterans in the culinary arts.
What to look for
- The funnel-shaped bottoms of the silos, which show the hopper design that lets grain pour out by gravity.
- The contrast between the plain, industrial metal and the carefully preserved brick and ironwork of Hotel Emma behind it.
- The tall brewery chimney, which can be seen from almost anywhere in the Pearl complex and helps you orient yourself.
- The mix of old and new uses around you, with a hotel, restaurants and a culinary school all working in former brewery buildings.
Tips for your visit
- Ten to fifteen minutes is enough for the silos themselves, but give yourself longer to wander the rest of the Pearl.
- Go in the late afternoon for softer light on the metal and brick, or in the morning for fewer people.
- Hotel Emma is open to the public, so you can step into the lobby or have a bite to eat. Check current opening hours before you go.
- The Culinary Institute of America campus is close by, and its restaurant is a short walk from the chimney if you want to taste student and faculty cooking.
See it on a quest
