À propos Briscoe Western Art Museum
The Briscoe Western Art Museum is a museum of Western art and history on the San Antonio River Walk in downtown San Antonio, Texas. Outside its River Walk side stands a sculpture of a vaquero driving longhorn steers, a nod to the cattle-driving heritage of the city and the region. It is an easy stop for anyone walking the river or exploring the streets around Market Street.
The story behind it
The sculpture outside the museum is called Camino de Gálvez. It shows a vaquero, a Spanish-Mexican cowboy, pushing three long-horned steers up the riverbank, cracking a rawhide lariat to keep them moving. The scene suits both the city's past and the museum behind it, which is devoted to the American West.
The work was inspired by Bernardo de Gálvez, the Spanish general and governor of Louisiana. During the American Revolution he worked to gather supplies for the colonial American cause, and in 1779 he authorized a cattle drive out of Texas to feed his forces in Louisiana. San Antonio's ranching roots run deep, and this piece ties them to a wider story of the period.
What to look for
- The vaquero's raised lariat, which the sculptor caught at the moment of the crack that sets the herd moving.
- The three longhorn steers, whose wide horns and tense stride give the group a sense of motion on the riverbank.
- The position of the sculpture beside the water, which reminds you that cattle and horses once moved through this area, long before the River Walk became a promenade.
- The neighbouring Hotel Contessa, right beside the museum, which shows how closely the old and the new city sit together here.
Tips for your visit
- Allow ten to fifteen minutes to see the sculpture and the museum's exterior, and much longer if you plan to go inside for the galleries.
- Check current opening hours and admission details on the museum's website before you go, as they change.
- Morning or late afternoon is pleasant for a stroll, when the River Walk is calmer and the light is softer.
- The museum is within easy walking distance of other downtown sights, so it fits well into a longer wander along the river.
