National Football Museum

Waterhouse won the commission in 1867 from a competition that attracted 137 entries. The building took nine years to construct, using 14 million bricks, and its 85-metre clock tower houses "Great Abel," a bell named after Mayor Abel Heywood who championed the project.

The interior is equally impressive. The Great Hall features the Manchester Murals by Ford Madox Brown, a series of 12 paintings illustrating key moments in the city's history, from the Romans at Mancenion to the opening of the Bridgewater Canal.
