À propos Teeling Whiskey Distillery
Teeling Whiskey Distillery is a working Irish whiskey distillery on Newmarket in the Liberties, Dublin. Opened in 2015, it was the first new distillery in the city in about 125 years, and it brought whiskey making back to a neighbourhood that was once full of it.
The story behind it
The word whiskey comes from the Gaelic uisce beatha, meaning water of life. Dublin was once a major whiskey-making city, and the Liberties sat at the heart of the trade before most of the old distilleries closed. The Teeling family's connection to Irish whiskey goes back to 1782, and Walter Teeling is remembered as an early distiller in the family line.
Brothers Jack and Stephen Teeling opened the distillery in 2015. Whiskey was in their blood, because their father founded Cooley Distillery in County Louth. Today the distillery is known for small-batch releases and unusual cask maturations. The streets around it carry a darker tale too: the Dublin Whiskey Fire of 1875, in which thirteen people died. None were killed by the flames. They died of alcohol poisoning after drinking the high-proof spirit that flowed through the streets.
What to look for
- The copper pot stills, the heart of any whiskey distillery, which you can see up close if you join a tour.
- The mix of old and new in the Liberties, where a modern distillery sits among streets with a long brewing and distilling past.
- The range of bottlings and cask finishes on display, which show how the distillery experiments with maturation.
- The street names and old warehouse buildings nearby, which hint at the district's industrial history.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about an hour if you join a distillery tour, and check current opening hours and booking options before you go.
- Inside access is through the visitor experience, so plan ahead if you want to see the stills and taste the whiskey.
- You can look at the building from the street at any time, which suits a quick stop on a walk.
- The Liberties is full of things to see on foot, including St Patrick's Cathedral and the Guinness Storehouse, so combine the distillery with a wider walk.
See it on a quest
The Dublin Incident: Alien, Whiskey & Clues is a good way to see this part of the city. You reach the distillery on foot as one stop of a longer route through the area, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle on the spot. One ticket covers the whole group.
Dublin in Flames: The Whiskey Hellfire follows the whiskey theme through the streets around the Liberties. You walk to the distillery as part of a longer route, hear the story of each stop as you get there, and solve a puzzle in front of you. One ticket covers the whole group.
