À propos Lighthouse
The Lighthouse of Chania stands at the end of the breakwater guarding the old Venetian harbour in Chania, on the Greek island of Crete. Begun by the Venetians and given its present form under Egyptian rule, it is often described as one of the oldest lighthouses still working, and it is probably the most photographed spot in town.
The story behind it
The Venetians were sailors and traders, and they invested heavily in public works to protect Chania from pirates and from Ottoman attack. The first lighthouse was part of that effort, marking the harbour entrance. A local story says a huge chain was fixed at its base and could be drawn across to the Firkas fortress on the opposite side whenever the harbour needed to be closed.
After the Ottomans took the city, the tower fell into disrepair. Crete later passed into Egyptian hands during the 1830s, and it was the Egyptians who rebuilt the lighthouse into the shape you see today. Many layers of rulers have left their mark on this one tower, which is part of why it feels so rooted in the city.
What to look for
- The stone base, which belongs to the older Venetian structure, and the tower above it, which comes from the Egyptian-era rebuilding.
- The Firkas fortress across the harbour mouth, the other end of the legendary chain that once closed the port.
- The view back along the breakwater toward the old harbour, with the waterfront buildings curving around the water.
- The changing light on the tower itself, which makes it a favourite subject for photographers.
Tips for your visit
- The lighthouse is not open to visitors, so you admire it from outside, but you can walk out along the breakwater to see it up close.
- Allow a relaxed half hour for the walk out and back, longer if you like to linger over photos.
- Late afternoon and sunset are lovely times to go, when the light softens over the water. Mornings are usually calmer.
- The harbourfront cafes and the Firkas fortress are close by, so it combines easily with a wider stroll around the old town.
See it on a quest
The lighthouse is one stop on Charming Chania: In Quest of True Love, a self-guided walk through the old town that you play on your phone. You reach the lighthouse on foot as part of a longer route, the app tells you about the place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle right there in front of you. If you want to walk out along the breakwater for a closer look, you can pause the game and pick it up again when you are back. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group, so you can start whenever suits you, with no guide and no set departure time.
