À propos Bran Castle
Bran Castle is a medieval fortress on a rocky outcrop above the village of Bran in Transylvania, Romania. Built in the 14th century to guard a mountain route, it later became a royal residence and is now widely known as Dracula's Castle, though its link to the legend is looser than the name suggests.
The story behind it
Before the stone castle there was an earlier fortress on this rock, built by the Teutonic Knights. This crusading order had been given the land to defend the south-eastern border of Transylvania, and it was driven out within a few years. The castle you see today goes back to King Louis the Great of Hungary, who granted the people of Brașov the right to build a new fortress here. It was meant to watch over the road through the pass and to protect a customs post, which Louis promised to move to the new castle. The townspeople built it through their own efforts, which is why it is sometimes called a castle of the people.
Its royal chapter began in 1920, when the town council of Brașov gave the castle to Queen Marie of Romania. She restored it, and it became a favourite residence of the royal family. Her grandson Dominic Habsburg, who spent part of his childhood here, became its owner in 2006. The Dracula fame comes from fiction: Bram Stoker, who never visited Romania, set his Count in a castle perched on a rock above a valley, and Bran is the castle most often matched to that picture. The historical Vlad the Impaler is often confused with the fictional count, but his connection to Bran is much thinner than the legend implies.
What to look for
- The castle's position on its rock above the road, which makes clear why it was a good place to control the pass.
- The cluster of white walls, towers and orange-tiled roofs, best seen from the village below.
- The rooms and furnishings that recall Queen Marie's years here, when the fortress became a family home.
- The view from the castle back over the village and the surrounding mountains.
Tips for your visit
- Allow one to two hours for the castle itself, plus time for the village streets and the stalls near its foot.
- Go early in the day, as this is one of the busiest sights in the region and queues build up later.
- You can go inside and visit it as a museum, so check current opening hours before you set out.
- Brașov and the citadel at Râșnov are both nearby, so the castle fits easily into a day trip.
