Acerca de The Seattle Aquarium
The Seattle Aquarium is a public aquarium on the Elliott Bay waterfront in Seattle, Washington, focused on the marine life of Puget Sound and the wider Pacific Northwest. It sits on Pier 59 at the foot of the city's downtown, a short walk from Pike Place Market, and it is one of the easiest places to see how Seattle and the water around it fit together.
The story behind it
The aquarium stands on a stretch of shore that has been reshaped many times. Chinook, chum, pink and coho salmon were migrating along the Duwamish River long before Seattle existed, and when the city grew it covered much of the natural shoreline with buildings, docks and piers. The salmon kept coming anyway, and each summer young fish still make their way downriver toward Puget Sound. Concrete seawalls and dark waters under the piers offered them little shelter, so the rebuilt Elliott Bay seawall, finished in 2017, added features meant to help: textured surfaces and recesses where small fish can find cover, and glass blocks set into the sidewalk to let daylight reach the water below.
The same waterfront has another story. In 1897 the steamer SS Portland reached Seattle from the Yukon carrying a heavy cargo of gold, and the news spread fast. The city's Chamber of Commerce promoted Seattle as the gateway to Alaska and the goldfields, and the Klondike Gold Rush drew roughly 100,000 hopeful miners, most of whom passed through the city to buy supplies and find a ship north.
What to look for
- The seawall along Alaskan Way outside the aquarium, where the glass blocks in the sidewalk and the textured wall are part of the habitat design for young salmon.
- The Pacific Northwest tanks and exhibits inside, which show the animals of Puget Sound rather than far-off tropical reefs.
- The sea otters and harbor seals, which are among the most popular residents for visitors of every age.
- The view across Elliott Bay from the pier, where ferries and working harbor traffic give a sense of why this shoreline mattered so much in 1897.
Tips for your visit
- Allow roughly two hours inside, longer if you travel with children or like to watch the feedings and talks.
- It is a ticketed attraction, so check current opening hours and admission details before you go. The waterfront outside is free to walk.
- Weekday mornings are usually calmer than weekend afternoons, and rainy days can bring more people indoors.
- Pike Place Market, the waterfront promenade and the Seattle Great Wheel are all within an easy walk, so it pairs well with a longer stroll.
See it on a quest
Seattle Gold Rush: Race to the S.S. Portland connects naturally with this waterfront, where the Klondike story played out. You reach the aquarium area on foot as one stop of a longer route through the area, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle in what is in front of you. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group.
Seattle: Harbor of Secrets, Hunt for the Golden Mermaid is a harbor-themed walk, a good fit for a place so tied to the water. You walk between stops at your own pace, hear about each spot as you get there and solve a puzzle on the spot, with no guide and no group to join. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group.
