Is there a music walking tour of Manchester I can do on my own?
Yes. This is a self-guided walk played on your phone. It covers 4.4 km and 15 stops, telling stories of kidnap, bankruptcy and Barbados linked to The Smiths, Happy Mondays, Oasis and even Madonna. There is no guide and no group to join, so you can start whenever you like.
Does the route include the Free Trade Hall?
Yes. The Free Trade Hall is the ninth stop, between The Temple of Convenience and the Theatre Royal. The route also takes in the place where the Sex Pistols played in the 1970s, the gig the quest treats as the inspiration for the city's later music scene.
Where does it start and finish, and how long does it take?
You start at Jonny Roadhouse Music and finish at Afflecks Palace, so it is not a loop. Most players take close to three hours, walking and puzzles included, over 4.4 km. You can pause along the way and pick up again later.
Is it suitable for children?
Children can play, but those under 12 should be guided by their parents. The stories focus on bands from the 1980s and 1990s, so the walk tends to suit teenagers and adults who know the music better than younger children, and the full route is 4.4 km.
Can we play as a group, and do we need to book a time?
Yes. One ticket covers the whole group playing together on the walk. There is no set time slot to book, since you start whenever suits you and lead yourselves from stop to stop with the app.
