Prospective students touring MIT with their parents, tech and science fans, and Boston visitors get a 2.5 km walk from Kendall Square past the Stata Center, Media Lab and Killian Court, with the school's history and student life woven into a spy story. Allow just over an hour and a half. If you want to step inside the buildings or ask a live guide about admissions, choose something else.

Where does this MIT self-guided tour start and finish?
It starts at Kendall Square and finishes at Building 7, so it does not return to the start. In between you walk about 2.5 km past the Stata Center, the MIT Media Lab, McDermott Court, Hayden Library, Killian Court, the MIT Chapel, Kresge Auditorium and the Alchemist sculpture.
How long does the MIT spy tour take?
Most players take just over an hour and a half, including the walking and the puzzles along the route. You can pause at any point and continue later, so there is time to stop for a coffee around Kendall Square or linger at Killian Court.
Can we play as a group?
Yes. One ticket covers the whole group playing together, which suits families visiting campus or a few friends following the spy story side by side. The app guides you from stop to stop, tells the story of each place and sets a puzzle based on what you can see there.
Do we go inside the MIT buildings or need attraction tickets?
No. You don't enter any of the places, as going inside is not part of the experience, and no attraction tickets are needed. Everything happens outdoors around the campus. Note that the route may be affected by temporary construction work.
Do we need to book a start time?
No. There is no group to join and no guide to meet, so you can start whenever suits you. Head to Kendall Square, open the quest on your phone and begin, then pause and pick it up again later if your plans change.
