Under the eyes of the worried peasants, who were watching from in front of the gates, groups of five, seven, ten or twenty men, some in city clothes, others in peasant clothes, ran past, taking the road to Pitesti.
Here and there, a man stops exhausted and falls, cursing, in the middle of the road. The others groan, grit their teeth and keep running...

Runners, sports-history fans and visitors to the Antipa Museum can follow the story of Romania's first marathon in 1896 on a 2.2 km loop through the Kiseleff area. The loop passes Monumentul Infanteriei, Monumentul Eroilor Aerului and Casa Doina, with puzzles that keep friends or couples busy for around 100 minutes. Anyone who wants a live guide to question, or an indoor museum visit, should choose something else.

What was the invasion of the fainting people?
On Pentecost Sunday in 1896, villagers northwest of Bucharest heard that war had begun. Groups of men in city and peasant clothes were running past on the road to Pitesti, some collapsing exhausted in the road. It was Romania's first marathon, and this walk tells that story.
Where does the quest start and finish?
It starts at the Antipa Museum and is a loop, finishing at Mavrogheni. Along the way you pass the Dino park, the Nicolae Iorga Institute of History, Monumentul Infanteriei, Ovidiu, Monumentul Eroilor Aerului, Casa Doina, Placa Italiana, Statuie Filosof and Scoala - Colt.
How long does it take and how far is the walk?
Players typically take around 100 minutes, so allow close to two hours, including walking and solving the puzzles. The route covers about 2.2 km through the Kiseleff area, taking in 11 stops in total.
Can we play as a group?
Yes. One ticket covers the whole group playing together, so friends, couples or a family can follow the route on one phone, read the story of each stop and work out the puzzles as a team.
Do we need to book a time, and can we pause?
No booking is needed. It is self-guided on your phone, so you can start whenever you like, with no group to join and no guide to meet. You can pause along the way and continue later from where you stopped.
