Acerca de The Bristol Harbour Railway

The Bristol Harbour Railway is a short dockside railway line in Bristol, opened by the Great Western Railway in 1872 to link the floating harbour with the main line at Temple Meads. It was built to move goods straight between ships and trains, and a section of it still carries heritage steam trains beside the water today.

The story behind it

Nineteenth-century Bristol had crowded streets, and carting cargo from the quays by road was slow. The railway offered a fix: goods could pass directly from ship to train and back again. For about a century it worked as a freight line, carrying cargo from the harbourside to the main line at Temple Meads.

The line is only about three-quarters of a mile long, yet it was costly to build because it had to be pushed through an area that was already developed. Today the surviving stretch is run as a heritage line. Two steam locomotives built in Bristol, named Henbury and Portbury, are used to haul trains on selected days, with rides linked to the M Shed museum and the SS Great Britain.

What to look for

  • Look for the rails set into the quayside, which show how closely the trains once worked with the ships and cranes.
  • Watch for the two Bristol-built steam locomotives, Henbury and Portbury, if a heritage service is running.
  • Notice how the line squeezes between the water and the buildings, a reminder of how tight the harbourside was when it was laid out.
  • Look across the water to the SS Great Britain and the M Shed, the two stops tied to the heritage train rides.

Tips for your visit

  • You can see the track from the harbourside for free, so a short stop is enough. Allow longer if you want to ride a train.
  • Heritage trains run only on some days, so check the current timetable before you plan around a ride.
  • The M Shed museum and the SS Great Britain are close by, which makes it easy to combine all three in one outing.
  • Go on a dry day and in daylight, when the harbourside is at its best for a slow walk and photos.
