Über Centraal Museum
The Centraal Museum is the city museum of Utrecht in the Netherlands, and one of the oldest of its kind in the country. Its collection runs from medieval religious art and Golden Age painting to modern design and fashion, and it holds the largest collection of work by Dick Bruna, the Utrecht-born creator of Miffy.
The story behind it
The Centraal Museum grew out of Utrecht's own civic collections, which makes it a museum about the city as much as about art. Part of it is housed in a former convent, so the building itself carries some of the history it displays. Its galleries follow Utrecht's story from the Middle Ages through the Dutch Golden Age and into the twentieth century.
The museum is best known for the Utrecht Caravaggisti, a group of painters who travelled to Italy in the early 1600s, were struck by Caravaggio's dramatic use of light and shadow, and brought that style home. Gerard van Honthorst and Hendrick ter Brugghen are the most famous of them, and both are represented here. The other big draw is Dick Bruna, who drew the small white rabbit Miffy (Nijntje in Dutch) for the first time in 1955 and kept illustrating her for more than six decades.
What to look for
- Look at how the Caravaggisti paintings use a single strong light source against deep shadow, a style that Honthorst and Ter Brugghen took from Rome back to Utrecht.
- Find the Dick Bruna material, where the bold outlines and flat colours of Miffy's world are easy to appreciate up close.
- Notice the medieval religious art, which shows how central the church was to Utrecht's identity long before the Golden Age.
- Pay attention to the setting itself, as parts of the museum occupy an older convent building that sits quite differently from the modern galleries.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about one and a half to two hours if you want to see the main collections without rushing, and check current opening hours before you go.
- Visit in the morning or on a rainy afternoon, when it makes a good break from walking the city.
- The Nijntje Museum, made for young children, is just across the road, so families can easily pair the two.
- The museum is a short walk from the historic centre, so you can combine it with the canals and the Dom area in the same outing.
See it on a quest
The Utrecht Monster Mystery Escape Game passes the Centraal Museum as one stop on a longer walk through the area. You reach each place on foot, the app tells you about it as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you. It is a lively way to take in the museum and the streets around it, and one ticket covers the whole group.
