Über Vasa Museum
The Vasa Museum in Stockholm is built around a single object: the Swedish warship Vasa, which sank on its maiden voyage in 1628 and was raised from the harbour more than three centuries later. It is one of the best-preserved 17th-century ships in the world, and it sits on the island of Djurgården, a short distance from the city centre.
The story behind it
King Gustavus Adolphus ordered the Vasa as a showpiece of Swedish naval power, with heavy guns and lavish carved decoration. On 10 August 1628 it set sail from the Stockholm waterfront in front of a crowd, but it was unstable and heeled over in the wind. It went down after sailing only a short distance, within sight of the city.
The wreck stayed on the seabed until it was located and salvaged in 1961. The cold, brackish water of the Baltic kept the wood from being eaten by shipworm, which is why so much of the hull survived. It was conserved over many years and is now displayed in a purpose-built museum that opened in 1990.
What to look for
- The stern of the ship is covered in carved figures, and they show how much the king wanted the ship to impress as well as to fight.
- The gun ports along the side show how heavily armed the ship was, and they help explain why it was so top-heavy.
- Walk the different levels of the hall to see the hull from below, at eye level and from above, because each view shows different details.
- The exhibitions around the ship explain how the wreck was found, raised and preserved, and tell the stories of the people who sailed on her.
Tips for your visit
- Allow around two hours to see the ship and the exhibitions properly, and longer if you like reading every display.
- The museum is indoors, so it works well on a rainy day, but check current opening hours and ticket information before you go.
- Visit early or late in the day if you can, since the hall is quieter when fewer tour groups are around.
- Djurgården has other attractions close by, including Skansen and the Nordic Museum, and it is pleasant to reach on foot along the waterfront.
See it on a quest
The Royal Vikings of Stockholm quest is a good way to see the Vasa Museum as part of a longer walk through the area rather than as an isolated stop. You reach each place on foot, the app tells you about it as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you. With a royal and Viking theme, it suits a city where so much history is tied to the water. One ticket covers the whole group, and you can start whenever you like, with no guide and no fixed departure time.
