Über Veterans Memorial Park

Veterans Memorial Park is a public park in Sanford, Florida, on the edge of downtown close to the shore of Lake Monroe. It is tied to the 1830s military post that began as Camp Monroe and was renamed Fort Mellon during the Seminole Wars. That makes it a place to honor veterans and also one of the best spots to picture Sanford before it was a town.

The story behind it

Camp Monroe was set up in the mid-1830s to defend the area during the Seminole Wars. Pickets enclosed the camp on three sides, while the fourth side stayed open to the St. Johns River, which gave soldiers a water route for supplies. A long pier was built so that boats could unload what the garrison needed.

After an attack on February 8, 1837, the Army post was renamed Fort Mellon. The name honors Captain Charles Mellon, the only casualty of that battle. The town of Sanford grew up on this lakeshore later, but the fort is the earliest chapter of the story, and the name still turns up around the area.

What to look for

  • Look out over the water toward Lake Monroe, a broad stretch of the St. Johns River, and imagine why soldiers wanted a post with a river on one side.
  • Read any memorial markers and plaques in the park, which honor the people who served in the armed forces.
  • Watch for signs or markers that mention Fort Mellon or Camp Monroe, and think about the name of Captain Charles Mellon.
  • Notice how close the park is to the downtown streets, a reminder of how the later town grew from this lakeside spot.

Tips for your visit

  • Plan for a short stop of 15 to 30 minutes, longer if you want to sit by the water or read the markers.
  • Early morning and late afternoon are the most comfortable times in Florida, with softer light over the lake.
  • Combine it with a stroll along the lakefront and the nearby streets of downtown Sanford, where there are cafes and shops.
  • It is an outdoor public park, but check current local information for any events or closures before you go.
