What is the Embarcadero in San Francisco?
The Embarcadero is San Francisco's waterfront, the stretch of piers along the bay at the foot of Telegraph Hill. On this walk it is one of the stops, linking the hill and its stairways with the waterfront piers, close to Levi's Plaza Fountain.
Where does the walk start and finish?
It starts at the crosswalk on Union Street and Stockton Street in North Beach and ends at the same spot. The loop takes in the Embarcadero, the Greenwich and Filbert Steps, Pioneer Park, Coit Tower, Bob Kaufman Alley, Saints Peter and Paul Church and the Volunteer Firemen Memorial.
How long does it take and how hard is it?
Plan on about 2 hours for 3.5 km. Difficulty is medium, and the route climbs and descends long stairways with uneven ground, so it is not suitable for wheelchairs. Go in the morning to avoid the heat, bring water, a hat and sunscreen, and avoid playing at night. You can pause and continue later.
Is it good for kids?
It suits older children, roughly 10 and up, who can handle lots of stairs and enjoy medium-difficulty puzzles based on what is in front of them. The firefighting heiress story and the tower at the top give them a clear goal. Very young children may find the climb and the 2-hour length too much.
Do we need to book a time, and can we play as a group?
