Über George Square
George Square is the main civic square of Glasgow, Scotland, a open plaza ringed by Victorian buildings and dominated by the City Chambers on its east side. It has been the heart of public life in the city since the late 18th century, and it is where Glaswegians gather for celebrations, protests and remembrance.
The story behind it
The square was laid out in the late 1780s and named after King George III. Over the following century it filled with statues of poets, engineers and politicians, and the grand City Chambers, designed by William Young, was completed in the late 1880s as a show of the city's wealth and confidence. Its marble staircases and richly decorated interior are among the finest of any civic building in Britain.
The building also sits close to the story of Glasgow's patron saint, St Mungo. Four legends tied to him make up the symbols on the city's coat of arms: a robin he is said to have brought back to life, a branch that he turned into a flame to relight a monastery fire, a ring belonging to a queen that was found in the mouth of a fish, and a bell said to have been brought from Rome. Together they are the way Glasgow tells its own origin story.
What to look for
- The long front of the City Chambers, with its carved stonework, towers and ornate entrance, is the best vantage point for taking in the Victorian ambition of the city.
- The Cenotaph, guarded by two stone lions, is Glasgow's central war memorial and the focus of remembrance ceremonies.
- The tall column topped by a statue of Sir Walter Scott stands at the centre of the square, with statues of figures such as James Watt and Robert Burns around the edges.
- The bird, tree, fish and bell of St Mungo's legend appear in the city's heraldry, so look for them on and around civic buildings as you walk.
Tips for your visit
- The square is an open public space and free to walk through, and 20 to 30 minutes is enough to see the main sights.
- Late afternoon light is kind to the City Chambers facade, and the square is quieter early in the morning.
- Tours inside the City Chambers have been offered at set times, so check current availability before you plan to go in.
- Queen Street Station, Buchanan Street shopping and the Merchant City are all a short walk away, and Glasgow Cathedral, linked to St Mungo, is a little further east.
