Über St. Mary's Basilica

St. Mary's Basilica (Bazylika Mariacka) in Gdansk is a vast Gothic brick church in the Main Town, widely counted among the largest brick churches in the world. It is known for its sheer size, its medieval astronomical clock and the view from its tower, and it anchors the old centre of the city.

The story behind it

Building began in the 14th century and the church took well over a century to complete, which is why it feels so monumental. Over the centuries it passed into Lutheran hands during the Reformation, and it became a Catholic church again only after the Second World War. The war left Gdansk's historic centre badly damaged, and the basilica was rebuilt and restored in the years that followed.

Inside stands the astronomical clock, designed by Hans Düringer in the late Middle Ages. It is a tall, richly decorated piece on several tiers, with a calendar and a planetarium dial that tracks the hours, the position of the sun and the phases of the moon. Figures appear at set times to the sound of bells.

Right next to the basilica is the Royal Chapel, the only Baroque church in the Main Town. It was founded at the initiative of King Jan III Sobieski for the city's Catholics, who had been shut out of St. Mary's by the Lutherans. Its interior burned in 1945 and it was restored between 1946 and 1948. Its facade blends the look of a church with that of a palace, with Italian and Dutch touches.

What to look for

  • The astronomical clock inside the church, with its tiers of dials, the calendar and the moving figures.
  • The sheer scale of the brick walls and tall interior, which gives a sense of how many people the church was built to hold.
  • The facade of the Royal Chapel nearby, where church and palace styles meet in one front.
  • The view over the red roofs of the Main Town if you climb the tower, subject to current access.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 30 to 45 minutes for the church itself, and more if you climb the tower or want to watch the clock closely.
  • Check current opening hours and entry rules before you go, as access to the church and the tower can change, and services may limit visiting.
  • Dress modestly and keep voices low, since this is an active place of worship.
  • Pair the visit with a walk along nearby Mariacka Street and down to the Motława waterfront, both a few minutes away on foot.
