Über The Colchester War Memorial
The Colchester War Memorial stands on the High Street in Colchester, Essex, in the middle of the town's historic centre. Like any war memorial, it is a place to pause and remember the people from the community who were lost in conflict. It is also an easy stop on a walk through Britain's oldest recorded town.
The story behind it
The memorial sits on ground with a very long and dramatic past. Colchester was known to the Romans as Camulodunum, and around AD 60 it was attacked and burnt by the forces of Queen Boudica of the Iceni. Tradition, drawn from Roman writers, links her revolt to the harsh treatment she and her daughters suffered at Roman hands.
That destruction can still be traced under the modern town. Several metres below the streets of Colchester lies a band of red and black ash, soot and burnt debris known as the Boudica Destruction Horizon. Archaeologists have found items preserved in it, including gold and silver jewellery, coins and even a loaf of bread. So the High Street has been a place of loss and remembrance for a very long time.
What to look for
- Read the names and inscriptions on the memorial itself, which tell you who the town chose to remember and how.
- Notice how the memorial sits within the High Street, with traffic, shops and historic buildings around it, so that everyday life and remembrance share the same space.
- Look along the High Street in both directions and pick out the mix of Victorian and older frontages that make up the town centre.
- Check whether any wreaths or flowers have been left, which shows that the memorial is still part of living local memory.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about ten minutes here for a quiet look, longer if you want to read every inscription.
- Visit in the morning, when the High Street is calmer and it is easier to stand and take it in.
- Colchester Castle and Castle Park are a short walk away, so the memorial fits easily into a wider stroll through the centre.
- Be respectful, keep voices low and avoid posing for photos on or against the monument.
See it on a quest
The memorial is a stop on Boudica's Legacy: Women of Colchester. You reach it on foot as one stop of a longer route through the town, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle on the spot. It is a more engaging way to see the streets than reading a plaque, and one ticket covers the whole group.
