Über Cleveland Botanical Garden
The Cleveland Botanical Garden is a public garden at 11030 East Boulevard in the University Circle district of Cleveland, Ohio. It grew out of the Garden Center of Greater Cleveland, founded in 1930, and today combines outdoor gardens with a glasshouse that holds a Madagascar desert and a Costa Rican cloud forest under one roof.
The story behind it
The garden began in 1930 as the Garden Center of Greater Cleveland, a civic organisation for people who wanted to learn about plants. Its first home was a boathouse on the shore of Wade Lagoon, a modest building that was a poor fit for a growing collection of books and seedlings. The organisation later moved to its current site on East Boulevard.
The ground has a past of its own. This corner of Wade Park was once the setting for an early city zoo, and the animals were later moved elsewhere in Cleveland. In 1994 the Garden Center took the name Cleveland Botanical Garden. In 2003 it opened the Eleanor Armstrong Smith Glasshouse, which recreates two very different habitats from opposite sides of the world.
What to look for
- The glasshouse itself, a large glass structure that holds two separate biomes, so you can compare two climates within a few steps of each other.
- The spiny desert of Madagascar, where the plants have odd, sculptural shapes that look nothing like a typical garden.
- The Costa Rican cloud forest, where the damp, warm air is a sharp contrast to the Ohio weather outside.
- The outdoor gardens around the building, including the Japanese garden and the children's garden, which change character through the seasons.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about an hour or two if you want to see both the glasshouse and the outdoor gardens at an easy pace.
- Check current opening hours and admission details before you go, as they vary by season and for special events.
- The garden sits in University Circle, so it pairs well with a walk to Wade Lagoon, the Cleveland Museum of Art and other nearby cultural sites.
- Spring and summer show the outdoor beds at their fullest, while the glasshouse is a good choice on a cold or wet day.
