Is this a Chinatown escape room?
It plays like an outdoor escape game rather than a room. The story is set in China in 1375, and you solve puzzles using details of the buildings, murals and monuments in front of you, guided by an app on your phone as you walk Chinatown's streets.
Is there a scavenger hunt style game for exploring Chinatown?
Yes. The app leads you through 12 stops, including the Chinatown Mural, the Chinatown Gateway, the Pui Tak Center, the Chinese American Museum of Chicago and the Nine Dragon Wall. At each one you hear the story of the place and look for clues outside to crack a puzzle.
Where does the quest start and finish?
It starts at Chinatown Square Plaza and finishes at Ping Tom Memorial Park, a 17-acre park along the Chicago River. The route does not loop back, so you end up by the river rather than where you began.
How long does it take and how far is the walk?
Most players take around an hour and a half, including walking and solving the puzzles. The route covers about 2.8 km. You can pause at any point, for example to eat at one of the restaurants on the way, and continue later.
Can we play as a group, and do we need to book a time?
One ticket covers the whole group playing together on the route. There is no fixed departure or guide to meet, so you can start whenever suits you and go at your own pace.
