Über Notre Dame de La Santé
Notre Dame de la Santé is a small chapel at the head of the Pont Vieux in Carcassonne, on the lower town side of the river Aude. It began as a hospital for plague victims and later served pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela, which makes it a quiet marker of the city's medieval life.
The story behind it
The spot beside the Pont Vieux was once watched over by two holy places, and Notre Dame de la Santé was one of them. It started as a hospital caring for people struck by plague, then became a chapel where pilgrims paused on the long road toward Santiago de Compostela. Its name, which means Our Lady of Health, fits that past.
Faith in medieval Carcassonne was not only the faith of Rome. The Cathars were Christians who held that the world was divided between a good God, creator of the eternal soul, and an evil power who made time, flesh and the material world, where the soul was trapped. They rejected wealth and church ornament. The Church in Rome treated them as heretics, and the region was marked by the long conflict that followed. Standing at the bridge, you are looking at the same landscape where those stories played out.
What to look for
- The modest scale of the chapel itself, which reflects its beginnings as a place of care and rest rather than grand worship.
- The Pont Vieux beside it, the old bridge over the Aude that linked the lower town with the hill of the medieval Cité.
- The view across the river toward the walls and towers of the Cité, a good place to picture pilgrims and travellers arriving.
- The street name, Rue des Trois Couronnes, a reminder that this corner of town has layers of history in its small details.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 15 to 20 minutes for the chapel and the bridge. It is a short stop, best combined with a longer walk.
- Late afternoon gives soft light on the Cité across the water, and the walk is cooler in summer.
- Check whether the chapel is open to visitors before you count on going inside, as access can vary.
- The Pont Vieux, the river bank and the climb to the medieval Cité are all close by on foot, so you can continue straight on.
