Über Harvard Coop

The Harvard Coop, formally the Harvard Cooperative Society, is the well-known campus store at 1400 Massachusetts Avenue in Harvard Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Founded by Harvard students in 1882 as a cooperative, it sells books, Harvard clothing and gifts, and it sits at the busiest crossing of the square.

The story behind it

The Coop began in the 1880s as a student venture. The idea of a cooperative was that students could buy what they needed together and keep costs down. Over the following century it grew from that small beginning into one of the best-known names in Harvard Square, and locals still say simply "the Coop".

The store is only one layer of the square's story. Just across the way is the old Harvard Square subway kiosk, and the subway from Boston reached Harvard on 23 March 1912. The first entrance here was a large brick-and-stone headhouse that people soon disliked, because it blocked drivers' views and left streetcar passengers little room to wait. The kiosk you see today, designed by architect Clarence H. Blackall, was built in 1928 as the station's new main entrance. It was restored when the station was renovated in the 1980s, and for decades afterwards it housed the Out of Town News newsstand, which sold papers from around the world.

What to look for

  • The Coop sign and storefront on Massachusetts Avenue, which mark one of the most photographed commercial corners in the square.
  • The Harvard-branded clothing and gifts inside, which show how closely the store is tied to student and alumni life.
  • The brick-and-glass kiosk in the middle of the square, a short walk from the Coop, with the subway entrance beside it.
  • The steady flow of students, tourists and street performers around the crossing, which gives a good sense of how the square works.

Tips for your visit

  • You can walk into the Coop to browse. Check current opening hours before you go, as they can change with the academic calendar.
  • Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the store, and more if you want to wander the square afterwards.
  • Daytime is best, when the square is busy and the shops are open. Weekday mornings are usually calmer.
  • Harvard Yard, the subway kiosk and many cafes and bookshops are all within a few minutes on foot, so pair the Coop with a stroll around the square.
