Über John F. Kennedy Memorial Park
John F. Kennedy Memorial Park is a five-acre riverside park on Memorial Drive in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the Commonwealth's official memorial to President John F. Kennedy. A granite fountain carved with his words stands at its centre, a short walk from Harvard Square. It is a calm spot on the Charles River with a surprising backstory.
The story behind it
Long before it was a memorial, this land held car barns, the sheds where Boston's transit cars were stored and serviced. When plans took shape for a Kennedy presidential library, Cambridge was meant to host it. Local opposition pushed the library to Dorchester instead, and this park is what Cambridge kept as its tribute.
The park was designed by landscape architect Carol R. Johnson, with a granite memorial fountain by John Gustafson. Johnson said the idea came from watching water run over rocks on a hike in New Hampshire. The quotations cut into the stone were chosen by the Kennedy family. The park was dedicated in 1987, the year Kennedy would have turned 70, with family members present.
What to look for
- The granite fountain at the heart of the park, built so that water would flow over the rock and across Kennedy's words.
- The inscribed quotations, which are worth reading slowly, since the family chose each one.
- The gently shaped lawn that slopes toward the Charles River and gives a wide, open view of the water.
- The mature trees around the grounds, which soften the edges of a site that was once a transit yard.
Tips for your visit
- Plan on 15 to 30 minutes for the park itself, longer if you want to sit by the river or walk the riverside paths.
- Early morning and late afternoon are quietest, and the low light on the water is lovely near sunset.
- It is an open-air park, so there is no inside to visit. Water features can be switched off, so enjoy the carved words either way.
- Harvard Square is close by, so it pairs easily with a wider walk through Cambridge. Check current opening hours for any nearby museums or shops you plan to enter.
